Giveaway – 60 years of Sweet Love (Hearts)

When I was a child, every day after school we’d walk down the road to the local newsagent and wait our turn outside (we weren’t too riotous but the shopkeeper sensibly had a ‘two children at a time’ rule). I remember looking up at a wall of old-fashioned glass jars filled with confectionery jewels, all shouting ‘eat me’ like the very small cake in Alice in Wonderland.

My favourites were white chocolate mice, rhubarb and custard boiled sweets, cola cubes, liquorice sticks, drumstick lollies and sherbet dib dabs. (Remember any of these?) I’d buy the penny sweets by the quarter and stuff the little white paper bag in my blazer pocket ready for the bus ride to the station. My reward for a day learning things I thought I’d never need to know. But none of these sweet treats were as iconic as Love Hearts.

Can you believe that Love Hearts have been around for 60 years? So iconic that a sculpture of one was placed in the Millennium Dome, no really. And 1.75 billion Love Hearts are sold every year – enough to stretch around the world 1.1 times!

The messages on Love Hearts evolved over the years with ‘Fax Me’, ‘Page Me’ ‘Text Me’ and ‘Luv Me 24/7’ being added in 1999. They were dropped a few years later when pagers and fax became less popular.
